Publication: Morocco Twentieth Century, Energy Histories, Transportation Histories

Colette Apelian, Ph.D. (UCLA) Discussion
Hello, I would like to make you aware of two publications concerning the twentieth century or modern histories of preserving "medieval" cities in Africa like Fez, Morocco, established during the ninth c. CE. The publications cover sub-themes listed below and are :

1. Between the Local and Global: Motorized Vehicles and Everyday Life in Early French Colonial Fez, Morocco (1912-1930s) by Colette Apelian, Ph.D. at https://gum.co/SDAmK

2. Homi Bhabha’s Cultural Hybridity and Early Twentieth Century Modifications of Fez, Morocco by Colette Apelian, Ph.D. at https://gum.co/DfkkT

Subjects covered in both publications include

1. the histories of technologies in cities (electricity, automobiles)

2. urban preservation and its history

3. cultural relations and electricity in religious structures. Jewish and Muslim, primarily.

4. French Colonial Fez, Morocco (1912-56), a walled city established in the ninth century CE

5. light fixture design and materials

6. the importation of Edison light bulbs and Ford and Chevrolet vehicles, among others (business and trade history)

7. local histories, process, and practice based upon interpretations of actor network theory(ies) - power structures among stakeholders and their subversion and/or resistance (micro-political histories)

8. legal histories and applications or practice of the law as documented in legal archives

Both publications are distributed by Gumroad Digital Publication Distribution and they build upon doctoral and postdoctoral research, some of which was presented at the Middle East Studies Association conference, among others. The publications are also based upon my 2005 dissertation, _Negotiating the City: Conserving Fez, Morocco_ (University of California, Los Angeles).

Thank you for crossposting.

Sincerely,
