Call for Papers and for a Panel Proposal (deadline February 22nd, 2016)

Northwestern University’s Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA) plans to sponsor two panels as a coordinate organization of the African Studies Association at the upcoming ASA annual meeting in Washington, DC, taking place December 1st through 3rd, 2016.

The first panel, “New Voices in the Study of Islam in Africa,” will consist of four papers and is open to any presenter on any topic connected to the study of Islam in Africa in the social sciences and/or humanities, but first preference will be given to people who have not presented their work at an ASA or major European African studies conference in the past. Graduate students and scholars based in Africa are particularly encouraged to submit proposals. To be considered for this panel, submit a title, your institutional affiliation, and an abstract of no more than 200 words.
ISITA is accepting proposals for the title and scope of a second pre-organized sponsored panel. Proposals should be related to the theme of Islam in Africa from any field of the social sciences and/or humanities. Proposals should include a panel title and abstract, the list of presenters, and tentative titles for their papers. The panel proposal should indicate who will act as panel chair and serve as contact person. The panelists chosen for this sponsored panel must be prepared to supply full abstracts of their papers by March 1st, in order to allow us to meet the ASA’s deadline for panel submissions.
For ease of processing all submissions should conform to ASA guidelines for panel and paper submissions. These can be found at http://www.africanstudies.org/annual-meetings/2016-submission-guidelines.

Proposals for individual papers or for the full panel should be sent to Rebecca Shereikis at r-shereikis@northwestern.edu and must be received by February 22nd. An ISITA advisory committee will review all proposals and select the papers/panel for ISITA sponsorship. Anyone intending to present at the ASA must register for the conference by the May 31, 2016 deadline set by the ASA. Individuals must register themselves; ISITA cannot take responsibility for any panelist’s registration. ISITA is not able to provide financial support to assist scholars in attending the ASA, but may be able to provide a letter to facilitate visa applications.
