Passing of Prof. Dianne Ashton

H-Judaic is deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely passing of Dr. Dianne Ashton (1949-2022), Professor Emerita, Director of American Studies, and Past Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Rowan College, where she had taught since 1987.  A Ph.D. from Temple University, Prof. Ashton devoted her scholarship to American Jewish history, making important contributions to Jewish women's history in the US.  She served a term as editor of the journal, AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY, and authored REBECCA GRATZ: WOMEN AND JUDAISM IN ANTEBELLUM AMERICA; and HANUKKAH IN AMERICA: A HISTORY. She also coedited, with Ellen Umansky, the famous reader FOUR CENTURIES OF JEWISH WOMEN'S SPIRITUALITY.

Prof. Ashton suffered from significant physical disabilities and was eventually confined to a wheelchair, but she regularly appeared at scholarly conferences and maintained an active scholarly presence.  She will be deeply missed.

We extend deepest condolences to her husband, Richard Drucker, and to her family, colleagues, students and friends.
