United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 2022-2023 Annual Fellowships

Join a Dynamic, Multidisciplinary Community of Holocaust Scholars

The Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies is pleased to award fellowships that support significant research and writing about the Holocaust.

We welcome applications from all individuals who would benefit from accessing the Museum’s vast archival and artifact collections while working alongside Museum experts and visiting scholars from around the world. Annual fellowships are designed for scholars at all levels of their academic careers who are at least PhD candidates (ABD), including scholars not affiliated with universities. A principal focus of the overall fellowship program is to ensure the development of a new generation of scholars, and those early in their careers are especially encouraged to apply.

Benefits of Becoming a Mandel Center Fellow

A fellowship at the Mandel Center provides dedicated time to research, access to world-renowned archives, and opportunities to interact with an extensive network of people and institutions. From tailored onboarding meetings with Visiting Scholar Programs staff, to personal guidance through the Emerging Scholars Publications Program, to presentations by fellows and staff alike, fellows participate in an intimate environment designed to create the most fruitful research experience possible.

Many Mandel Center fellows hit their academic career milestones years earlier than the average US historian, including through the publication of monographs, promotion to professorship, and achievement of tenure or tenure-track positions. Mandel Center fellowships also open doors at non-academic institutions, including nonprofit, governmental and educational organizations. Former fellows have been involved as experts in the Museum’s revitalization project for its Permanent Exhibition, partnered with local institutions to implement novel commemorative ceremonies, and even testified at Congressional hearings. Whether one is researching, writing, or participating in a program, fellows are able to work on their projects while being involved in a scholarly and close community.

Fellowship Duration and Stipend

In addition, fellows receive a monthly stipend of $5,000, which may be subject to taxes, as well as a one-time travel stipend. Individual awards range from two to eight consecutive months of residency. A minimum of two consecutive months is required. No exceptions are allowed. Fellows may not hold a Mandel Center fellowship concurrently with other funded fellowships. The Mandel Center is also able to provide visa assistance to fellows and their dependents, if necessary. Fellows are responsible for securing their own housing accommodations and health insurance. We do not provide support allowances for accompanying family members.

Application Materials and Guidelines

The Mandel Center’s 2022-2023 Annual Competition is currently open and will close on November 15, 2021. We would like to thank applicants for their understanding in advance, as the ongoing pandemic may affect the program in a variety of ways, such as our ability to accommodate preferred residency terms.

Awards are granted on a competitive basis. Successful project proposals should highlight the resources available at the Museum that scholars will need to access in order to support their research. An addendum listing these resources may be attached in addition to the five-page project proposal. Important resources may also be referenced in the body of the project proposal. Visit Collections Search to search the Museum's holdings.

Immediate postdocs and faculty between appointments will also be considered. Applicants who have received a fellowship award from the Mandel Center in previous cycles may not re-apply unless seven years have passed since the end date of their previous residency.

All applications must be submitted in English via our online application. Applicants will be notified of the outcomes by April of the following year. Fellowships may begin in the fall of the same year in which awardees are notified. All applications must consist of the following:

  • An online application form
  • A project proposal, in PDF format, not to exceed five single-spaced pages
  • A curriculum vitae summary, in PDF format, not to exceed four single-spaced pages
  • Two signed letters of recommendation that speak to the significance of the proposed project and the applicant’s ability to carry it out. Neither US Holocaust Memorial Museum staff nor members of the Mandel Center's Academic Committee may write letters of recommendation. Only two letters will be considered. Letters of recommendation must be received by the November deadline and come directly from the references, not from the applicant.

Click here to apply. All application materials must be received by November 15, 2021.
