Query: Looking for a Piyyut composed by Rabbi Simon Schwab z"l

Robert Schine's picture

In some correspondence, I came upon a quotation of a phrase from what seems to be a piyyut composed by Rabbi Simon Schwab z"l, rabbi of Adas Jeshurun in Washington Heights (the "Breuer'sche") from 1958 until his death in 1995. I've tried to identify its source, without success.

The name cited for the piyyut is הזוכר מזכירין.

The phrase: זכור וספור בנאדך צרור, apparently an allusion to Psalm 56:9.

For those with with the gift of a long memory, this query may ring a bell. I posted a similar question almost twenty years ago, to no avail. I thought I'd try again and would be grateful for any help.

Hello,

The poem in question is R. Shimon Schwab's "kinah" for the Shoah, entitled הזוכר מזכיריו. It is included in many collections of kinot/liturgies for the 9th of Av. Find the text here, including the line you quote, for example: http://zachor.michlala.edu/inquiry/articles/kina7.html

To augment the reply by Avinoam Stillman, the piyyut with English translation and a short account of how it came to be can be found in the Artscroll Mesorah Series' "Zechor L'Avraham / The Complete Tishah B'Av Service" 'Nusach Ashkenaz' pp. 386 - 390; and "Tefillah L'Moshe / The Complete Tishah B'Av Service" 'Nusach Sefard' pp. 392 - 396.

My sincere thanks for both of these responses as well as those I received from colleagues "off-line".
