A SACRED FRIENDSHIP OR AN UNHOLY ALLIANCE: AMERICAN JEWS AND EVANGELICALS

Prof. Amy Weiss

In 1977, the American Jewish Committee awarded Billy Graham its first National Interreligious Award in recognition of the evangelist's support of Israel and endorsement of interfaith relations. While the AJC enthusiastically promoted its award recipient, not all American Jews shared the same optimism about the organization's selection. Amy Weiss, in discussing research from her current book project, will reveal how this one award--aided by ongoing trends in American politics--initiated a decades-long alliance between Jews and evangelicals.
