H-Judaic is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Baila Round Shargel (1933-2021). A graduate of Goucher College and the Jewish Theological Seminary, Dr. Shargel taught at JTS, Pace University, Purchase College, and Manhattanville College. She was particularly known for her scholarship, including the standard biography of Israel Friedlaender (Practical Dreamer: Israel Friedlaender and the Shaping of American Judaism); a revealing volume on Henrietta Szold and her relationship with Levi Ginzberg (Lost Love: The Untold Story of Henrietta Szold, Unpublished Diary and Letters); a volume on the American Orthodox woman Zionist leader Bessie Gotsfeld; and The Jews of Westchester, a Social History. Dr. Shargel stood among the early cadre of female Jewish historians in the field of American Jewish history, and was a member of the Academic Council of the American Jewish Historical Society. She will be sorely missed.
We extend deepest condolences to the Shargel family and to Dr. Shargel's legions of readers and friends.
