H-Judaic is devastated to learn of the passing, from Covid19, of Prof. David M. Gitlitz (1942-2020), emeritus professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Rhode Island, and one of the foremost scholars of the world of the Crypto-Jews.  Trained at Harvard, and an accomplished teacher and administrator, Gitlitz's best-known book was the acclaimed SECRECY AND DECEIT:  THE RELIGION OF THE CRYPTO-JEWS, which won the National Jewish Book Award. He also published along with his wife, Prof. Linda Kay Davidson, A DRIZZLE OF HONEY: THE LIVES AND RECIPES OF SPAIN'S SECRET JEWS.  More recently, Gitlitz published on the theme of pilgrimage and in 2019, a book entitled LIVING IN SILVERADO: SECRET JEWS IN THE SILVER-MINING TOWNS OF COLONIAL MEXICO.  Prof. Gitlitz was active in the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies, where he served as senior advisor.  His last Facebook post, on December 17 in honor of Chanukah, read "We live in dark times, but there is light."

We extend deepest condolences to the Gitlitz family as well as to Professor Gitlitz's many friends and students.
