H-Judaic is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Prof. Sasson Somekh (1933-2019), winner of the Israel Prize and emeritus professor of Modern Arabic Literature at Tel Aviv University. Prof. Somekh may be best known to English readers for his memoir, Baghdad, Yesterday: The Making of an Arab Jew (2007). He published numerous other books and articles, including a pathbreaking study of "Lost Voices: Jewish Authors in Modern Arabic" and articles that ranged from genizah studies (with Mark Cohen) to "Biblical Echoes in Modern Arabic Literature." The Wikipedia article on Prof. Somekh may be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sasson_Somekh. Many thanks to Menachem Butler for alerting us to this news and for his assistance with this necrology.
We extend deepest condolences to the family.
