Research Query: Clermont-Ferrand, France WWI
I would like some research assistance please. During the late summer of early fall of 1918 the 303rd Field Artillery Regiment of the American Expeditionary Force trained near Clermont-Ferrand, France. I am interested in a description of the Jewish community of Clermont at that time. Specifically, I would like to find out, if possible, the relationship between members of the Jewish community and Jewish members of the AEF. I have letters which describe an American doctor spending the High Holidays and other times with a "wealthy couple" from Clermont. Here is one example of the relationship: October 6, 1918: ”I wrote to you, about the way I spent the [Jewish] Holidays, Well! These people just insist on taking up most of my spare time entertaining me and I can assure you that they do it too. I have never met such a hospitable and lovely couple. I enjoy their company a great deal.”
I have tried to contact the local Jewish community organization, but have not received a reply. Of course, the community has undergone many changes since 1918 and WWII. All help is greatly appreciated.
