Query: program to scan Hebrew to editable text?

Justin Jaron Lewis Discussion

Computer software and apps are available that will scan English documents into editable texts. Is such a program available for Hebrew?

With thanks,

Hi Justin,

I've found that ABBYY FineReader is the best OCR software for Hebrew and Hebrew/English texts. It's not free, though.

Best,
Binyamin

Abbyy Finereader and the full version of Adobe Acrobat (not Reader) have very good models for modern Hebrew typefaces (e.g., a well scanned journal article). If all you want is text (not, say, a spreadsheet or table), there is also google's built in OCR when you convert files to google doc format: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/176692?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesk…
If you want something more exotic (poorly preserved pages, an early modern typeface) something more customizable may be required).
Hope this helps.

Hi

Much better than a software: human beings who type the text into the computer! Usually two do it simultaneously, and the computer compares the texts, allowing the almost absolute elimination of errors. The cost is fairly reasonable.
I particularly like http://www.wordpro-pondicherry.com, whose self description is as follows:
For over 15 years, we have been proposing the digitizing of texts using a special technique (double key + electronic compare), which enables us to achieve very high levels of accuracy. We type and present the texts in a very structured manner (in several formats). For a number of scholars and publishers, we present the texts in Word format using character and paragraph styles, or in XML format according to a DTD (including the TEI DTD used by scholars world-wide). We receive much appreciation from our clients for our method of working and the consistency of our quality. They find it very convenient to process the documents digitized by us for verification, typesetting or for displaying on the Internet.

We input texts in most European languages, including Latin and ancient Greek (of which we are recognized specialists), from printed documents belonging to any period subsequent to the "incunabula" period.
Recently, we have acquired the ability to enter texts in Hebrew characters.

We have been working for several well-known academic publishers and scholars (particularly Middle-Ages, Renaissance) in France, Belgium and the USA (references on request).

We are always ready to prepare a test document (free of cost) to demonstrate our expertise.
