Query: Joseph Rabinowitz
Dear Colleagues,
A journalist friend of mine is translating a 2019 article that Yoel Matveyev wrote about Joseph Rabinowitz, the 19th century Talmud scholar who founded a church in Kishinev, because, in her words, "I think non-Yiddish readers would be interested in his story too. The heading would be something like 'The 19th century church leader that sermonized in Yiddish.' There's a good deal of material about him on missionary websites but I'd like to make sure they're not exaggerated. And of course, I'd like to hear [a scholarly] take on him as well."
Anyone with relevant expertise, please reply directly to Rukhl Schaechter <schaechter@forward.com>.
Kind regards,
Jonathan Schorsch
