Postdoctoral position (research associate) (m, f, d) in Digital Historical Research

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is a research institute within the Leibniz Association. It conducts and facilitates research on the historical foundations of Europe in the modern period and is engaged in current developments in the digital humanities. 

The IEG with its Digital Historical Research Unit | DH Lab invites applications for a full-time 

postdoctoral position (research associate) (m, f, d)

in Digital Historical Research

at the earliest possible date for the duration of five years (under the German WissZeitVG).
The salary accords to German pay grade TV-L EG 13. The position can be shared in principle.

Your responsibilities

• You pursue an individual research project with tools and methods of the Digital Humanities in the field of European history since c. 1500. We particularly welcome comparative and cross-border perspectives on the social, cultural, and religious history of Europe. 
• With your research activities and publications, you contribute to the shaping of the IEG’s research profile.
• You advise academic members of staff and guests of the IEG on the conception and use of digital tools and methods.
• In the DH Lab team, you will take on cross-sectional tasks at the interface between historical research and digital technologies. 
• You actively participate in the development and enhancement of digital research infrastructures and to the design of innovative research projects in regional, national, and European networks.
• You will collaborate in the Mainz Centre for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies (mainzed) and will be involved in teaching in the Master's degree programme "Digital Methodology".

Your profile

• completed university degree in a field relevant to the job description
• competences in the historically working humanities/cultural studies and in informatics/information science (verified e.g. by publications and project experience)
• completed doctorate (by the time of taking up the position)
• international research orientation
• a high level of communication skills, excellent teamwork and organisational skills as well as a cooperative attitude to work
• an excellent knowledge of both English and German
• an appreciation of interdisciplinary scholarly research questions

In addition, we would appreciate the following skills:

• in-depth knowledge of 

• Data Modelling or
• Natural Language Processing or
• Semantic Web technologies or
• Computer Vision or
• Historical Network Analysis or
• Historical Geographical Information Systems

• Experience in cooperative and interdisciplinary research projects
