The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies and The Raphael Patai Memorial Lecture Series welcomes you to attend this LIVE online conversation with Israeli filmmaker, Iris Zaki.

On April 24th, Dr. Anat Balint, Jeffrey B. Plevan Professor of Israel Studies, will lead a Zoom discussion with Israel filmmaker Iris Zaki about her film, Egypt, a Love Song.  In this 2022 film, Zaki takes her father on an intimate journey to explore the extraordinary life story of her grandmother, Souad Zaki.  She was a popular Jewish singer in 1940s Egypt, who married a Muslim musician.  The film unpacks the story of their complex Identity.

Iris Zaki is a Grierson award-winning artist-filmmaker with a signature cinematic style. Her first-person documentaries explore themes of complex identity, cross-cultural encounters, and community representation. Iris is teaching documentary filmmaking for BA and MA students at Sapir College in Israel, while also giving master classes in Europe and the US.
