The Jewish Studies area of the Midwest Popular Culture Association / Midwest American Culture Association is now inviting anyone with a fascination for Jewish life, culture, and artistry to submit proposals for the 2023 conference in Chicago, IL. In a time when Jewish issues have an enhanced visibility in American life, in popular media and sociopolitical discussions, we are looking for original and insightful research that explores these themes. Potential topics for paper and panel proposals include, but are not limited to:

Explorations of Jewish femininity and masculinity in popular media -
Cultural portraits of Jewishness, including representations of queer, disabled and/or BIPOC Jews -
Ongoing community efforts of Jewish advocacy, activism, and intersectional solidarity -
Antisemitism and cultures of hatred in online spaces and public spheres -
Visions of Jewishness and Judaism in literature, comic books and graphic novels -
Depictions of faith and religious ritual in popular media -
The history and revival of Yiddish entertainment, music, and storytelling -
Subversive Jewish comedy and performance in popular entertainment -
Media and news coverage of prominent Jewish celebrities and political figures (Brett Goldstein, Bernie Sanders) -
Portrayals of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in popular culture
Please submit a paper, abstract, or panel proposal (including the title of the presentation) to the “Jewish Studies” area on the Submissions website at https://www.mpcaaca.org/submit-panels. The submission deadline is April 30, 2023. Individuals may only submit one paper. Please do not submit the same paper to more than one area.
