Passing of Prof. Peter G.J. Pulzer

Shalom Berger Discussion

H-Judaic is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Peter G.J. Pulzer (1929-2023), Gladstone Professor emeritus of Government and Public Administration, and Fellow, All Souls College, at the University of Oxford.  One of the world's foremost historians of modern German and Austrian history, and himself a refugee from Nazism (see his memory of Kristallnacht, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emzor3hbB_k), he attended college in England (University of Cambridge, University of London) and  spent his entire academic career at Oxford, where he served as an Emeritus Fellow of All Souls College until his passing.  Pulzer's pathbreaking THE RISE OF POLITICAL ANTI-SEMITISM IN GERMANY AND AUSTRIA, first published in 1964 and based on his doctoral dissertation, remains a class work; Worldcat lists 76 editions! His other books include JEWS AND THE GERMAN STATE: THE POLITICAL HISTORY OF A MINORITY, 1848-1933; and a large number of other publications dealing with modern Germany, Austria and Britain, as well as with Jewish issues (see http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n87937796/).  A festschrift in Prof. Pulzer's honor entitled LIBERALISM, ANTI-SEMITISM, AND DEMOCRACY: ESSAYS IN HONOUR OF PETER PULZER appeared in 2001.

Prof Pulzer was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit from Germany (2004) and the Grand Silver Medal of Honour for Meritorious Service to the Republic of Austria (2008).

H-Judaic extends deepest condolences to his legions of colleagues, former students, admirers, as well as to his family.
