Christian Bailey (SUNY Purchase): Jewish Love in the Century of the Self

Drawing on newspapers, love letters, and official records, Christian Bailey explores the role of romantic relationships in German-Jewish lives from the 1870s to the 1970s, showing how ideals of romantic love helped German Jews develop a new sense of self.

Christian Bailey is Assistant Professor of History at Purchase College, SUNY. He completed his PhD in History at Yale University in 2009 and published his first book, "Between Yesterday and Tomorrow: German Visions of Europe, 1926-1950" in 2013 (paperback 2016). Since then he has worked in the fields of the history of emotions and German-Jewish history. His articles have appeared in The Journal of Modern History, Contemporary European History, German History, Geschichte und Gesellschaft and The Leo Baeck Institute Yearbook. His current book, "German Jews in Love," has just been published by Stanford University Press.
