'Tradition, Tradition, Tradition: An Evening of Performance & Talks Exploring the use of Old Material in Yiddish Theatre & Music'
Join us for an evening of performance and talks celebrating the rich history of London's Yiddish cultural scene, Changes in conventions, culture, and language make performing older Yiddish material challenging, yet many still want to engage with this interesting material. We will hear from historian, Yiddishist and performer Dr Vivi Lachs (Queen Mary, University of London, AHRC project ‘Making and Remaking the Jewish East End’) about her practice of incorporating early 20th century Yiddish texts in contemporary performances, and from Parkes Institute PhD candidate Katie Power about the use and re-imagination of older material in mid-century productions in the London Yiddish theatre.
