To everyone on H-DC:

I am retiring April 27, 2018. I don’t know who will be replacing me. After April 27, 2018, the contact information is archives1reference@nara.gov

It has been a wonderful 15 or more years working with researchers who are researching District of Columbia history or any other legal records.

The records of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia have been my passion for many years, As you know [an archivist has to write and explain everything out – even if the reader always knows] the district court served as a local court for the District of Columbia. The records include lawsuits, criminal cases, civil cases, probate records, wills, adoptions, and mental health case files, which can provide insight into some of the citizens of the District of Columbia past. I joke: I know more dead people than people who are alive.

Again, it has been a pleasure to know and work with the local historians and genealogists over the years. When people ask me what I do for a living I tell them I work with Federal court records and that I am a very small cog in the wheels of Justice.

I will be living in the District and hope to be more active in the local history community.

My email in the future will be kingbob.ellis@gmail.com [there is a back story to the name of this email].

 Sincerely,
