YOU'RE INVITED: SATURDAY, JULY 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to the sixth annual "SAYING THEIR NAMES, TELLING THEIR STORIES" gathering at Walter Pierce Park in Adams Morgan. Come hear the JUBILEE VOICES of the Washington Revels perform traditional African American songs; they will move and inspire you!
We'll pay tribute to the more than 8,000 people buried in the 19th century African American and Quaker cemeteries at the park. Because this will be our first gathering since the National Park Service named the park a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site, we'll shine a special light on those who ran away to freedom, leading the way to the end of slavery in the United States.
The Kalorama Citizens Association is sponsoring this event. We'll have light refreshments! No RSVP is necessary. Come help read the names aloud, or come to listen. Questions? Contact Mary Belcher, maryjbelcher@comcast.net or 202-390-9069. In case of rain, the event will be cancelled. To learn more about the history and archaeology of the site, go to www.walterpierceparkcemeteries.org.
PARK LOCATION AND OTHER INFO: The park is handicapped accessible. There are no bathroom facilities, but coffee shops are nearby. We'll gather at the Adams Mill Road end of the park. The park is located behind Calvert Street NW, between Biltmore Street and Adams Mill Road. The 90, 96, 42 and L2 bus lines stop near the park, as does the Adams Morgan Circulator bus. The nearest Metro stop is the Red Line's Woodley Park-Adams Morgan-Zoo station.
