CFP: Religion in the American West

The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art invites submissions of images + short reflections/captions for possible inclusion in a spring 2023 publication on the topic "Religion and the American West." Religion has helped shape the culture of the western United States, and religious practices and identity have also been impacted by being incorporated, sometimes forcibly, into the legal boundaries of the US: we want to explore those changes through personal, individual stories. This publication will accompany an exhibition designed around the same theme.

We're particularly interested in artwork, historical documents/photographs, or photographs of historical objects from people who belong to a wide variety of faith communities or spiritual journeys. We also welcome contributions from scholars to help contextualize religious practice in American history. The book will focus primarily on the 19th century, but will also include a chapter on modern religious practices.

Contributors will receive a stipend for their work; funds are also available to secure copyright release for images. Images that represent, have been created by, or used by Indigenous groups will not be accepted for publication without permission of appropriate tribal representatives; all images will be carefully evaluated before being accepted. Priority deadline is September 1, 2021. More information and the form to apply to be a contributor is available here:

Feel free to circulate this CFP broadly.
