Several recent books have examined the history of the European Left’s representations of and beliefs about Israel and Zionism. In a review article recently published in Rethinking History, I examine five such books that explicitly aim to explain why the European Left, starting in the late 1960s, turned against Israel. I find that the authors of these books tend to confuse their own political and moral judgements about Israel for historical explanations. The review article can be said to continue an exchange on H-antisemitism begun by Lars Fischer and Robert Wistrich in 2013. Aside from Wistrich’s book, the article discusses books by Jeffrey Herf, Colin Shindler, Joshua Muravchik and Paul Kelemen.
