In the aftermath of the two major international sports events of 2022 – the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing and the Men’s Football World Cup in Qatar – scholars concerned with the political implications of sport have been engaging once more in discussions about a wide range of issues in the field.

The International Spectator, the IR journal of Istituto Affari Internazionali, is delighted to announce that it will host a webinar to present its issue 2/2023 - a Special Issue on sport and International Relations.

This issue dives into the legacies of the two mega-events, critically examining questions of Olympic diplomacy, identity, environmental discourse, globalisation and soft power.

The webinar takes place on 20 June 2023, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM CEST via Zoom. Participants will include Emidio Diodato and Veronica Strina (University for Foreigners of Perugia), Jan Busse the (University of the Bundeswehr Munich) René Wildangel (International Hellenic University of Thessaloniki) and Francesco Belcastro (University of Derby).

Please find the registration link here.

The agenda includes:

  • Presentations of research articles published in the special issue
  • Discussion on the addressed topics
  • Q&A

We would like to invite all holders of interest in the politics of sport and culture events to join the webinar, the program is available here.
