The New York Metro American Studies Association (NYMASA) invites applications to participate in our 2017 Summer Institute, “Everything You Wanted to Know About Academic Professionalization (But Were Too Busy Updating Your CV to Ask).” This five-day institute will offer guidance on crucial skills and provide important information for advanced graduate students about to enter American Studies-related fields, and for junior faculty in those fields.  We are cosponsoring this Institute with the Columbia University Center for Study of Ethnicity and Race.

Over the course of a series of intensive workshops, seminars, lectures, and small group/one-on-one discussions, participants will have the opportunity to hear from academic publishers, scholarly journal editors, and leaders at a diverse array of colleges and universities. We will especially focus on the importance of mentorship, specific issues in the academy around race, gender, class, and sexuality, and the challenges of first-generation-college academics, as well as the nitty gritty of the job market, tenure and promotion, and service expectations.                     

Each week of the institute will comprise a rich array of activities. Every day, participants will attend discussions of various elements of academic life, from crafting a conference paper proposal to assembling a tenure and promotion dossier.  In the afternoon, we will focus more closely on specific skills and share expertise, followed by one-on-one and small group mentoring.

(Total cost is $150 and includes breakfast and lunch, daily.)
