Deadline extension for the submission of paper proposals for the International Seminar "Franco's Famine in Spain (1939-1952)"

Organization: Resear Project: "HAMBRUNA; La hambruna española: causas, desarrollo, consecuencias y memoria (1939-1952)"

We invite proposals for papers from a variety of disciplinary and comparative perspectives that promise to offer new substantive insights and/or innovative theoretical approaches to Franco's famine in Spain:

Topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Hunger and the Spanish Civil War
- Effects of war
- Causes of the Spanish Famine
- Humanitarian aid and international relations
- Starvation
- Infectious diseases
- Living standards
- Nutrition and ways of eating
- Everyday life
- Women, childhood and family
- Attitudes, strategies and tactics in the face of hunger
- Official discourses and propaganda
- Food policies and food supply
- Health policies
- Housing policies
- Repression, violence and famine
- Famine's effects: death, diseases and emigration
- Official and popular memory

Proposals for papers should be submitted to to arrive no later than 12 noon GMT on 31 May 2021.

Proposals should be no more than 500 words in length, and should include details of the research questions addressed and the material to be discussed. Please also include a brief (max 200 words) biography outlining current and past positions and key publications. Final papers must be submitted before than 12 noon GTM on 15 September 2021 and should not exceed 6,000 words in lenght.
