Panel Description:

Seeking a panelist to complete our panel for the Western Association of Women’s Historians Annual meeting, held virtually. Deadline is February 1, 2021.

This panel explores the construction of gender and the production of publics and public culture in settler communities in the trans-imperial British world. Panelists will explore conceptions of the public that can include geographic space such as markets, streets, taverns, coffeehouses, and town commons. The papers on this panel will consider the role of public space in the creation of gender identities in British colonial geographies. We examine the invention of new publics and public space alongside the reconstruction of gender roles and identities. All papers who might fit into this panel are more than welcome.

Current Papers include:

“Colonial Georgian Sericulture and Women in the Public Sphere.”

“British Masculinity and Public Culture: The Construction of Masculine Identities in Colonial Virginia and London Coffeehouses in the Long Eighteenth Century.”
