Dear collegues,

Two teaching related reminders and announcements:

First, based on the success of the syllabus prize and a suggestion from one of our members, H-Latam will add a section for teaching materials to the syllabus collection. If you would like to share lesson plans, activities, assignments, study guides, or any other materials that you have had particular success with in class, we will create a home for them here at H-Latam. Please email your materials to me, Casey Lurtz (lurtz@jhu.edu), for inclusion in the collection. If you have any interest in serving as a curator for this collection, please also reach out as I would appreciate some assitance in making this initiative a success!

Second, the deadline is coming up for the CLAH/H-Latam Syllabus Prize for 2021!

The CLAH Teaching and Teaching Materials Section of the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH) and H-Latam are please to partner with an anonymous donor to offer a $300 prize for the best syllabus posted to H-Latam’s Syllabi Collection.

To be considered for the prize, which will be awarded at the CLAH-AHA annual meetings, the following criteria must be met:

1. Syllabi must be posted to H-Latam between January 1 and December 1 of the year 2021. To post a syllabus, please send it to Marc Becker at marc@yachana.org.

2. In order to be considered, the author must be a member of CLAH in the year in which the syllabus is posted, and the following year, when the award is given.

3. Each year a different topic will be chosen, such as History of Mexico, Colonial Latin America, Introduction to Latin America, etc. For 2021, the topic will be “Beyond ABC: Incorporating More Countries into the Latin American-Caribbean Curriculum.” Those wishing to have their entries considered should include complete assignment guidelines within their syllabus, which may address any topic in Latin American History.

The CLAH President in conjunction with the Chair of the Teaching Committee will nominate a panel of three persons to evaluate the syllabi.

Please contact section chair Casey Lurtz lurtz@jhu.edu  or secretary Carlos Dimas Carlos.dimas@unlv.edu if you have any questions about this exciting initiative.

Cheers,
Casey, Carlos, and the H-Latam Team
