Call for Papers: “Latinx Visions”

We invite proposals for “Latinx Visions,” a conference to be held at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on March 9-11, 2023. Our esteemed keynote speaker is Lysa Rivera, expert in Chicanx science fiction and Associate Professor at Western Washington University. This conference aims to generate a dialogue among scholars, authors, artists, and community members who are engaging the burgeoning field of Latinx speculative fiction, art, performance, and protest. To this end we are inviting proposals for papers, author/artist talks, or performances which join diverse Latinx visions with speculative worlds.  These proposals can engage specific works of Latinx science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative genres, as well as offer visions and theories of the field as a whole. We are particularly interested in contributions and performances that highlight the unique political aesthetics of Latinx speculative fiction and that further develop the critical theories and perspectives on Latinx speculative fiction. In addition, we especially welcome proposals that are more comparative in nature and that are focused on indigenous and Afro-Latinx speculative fiction.

Papers and performances can focus on any genre from the broad category of Speculative Fiction and Speculative Art, including cyberpunk, solarpunk, utopias and dystopias, alternate histories, alien invasions, apocalypse, horror, ghosts, magic, epic fantasies, and surrealism.

Those interested can send their proposals of 250 words along with a short author-bio of 200 words to the organizers by November 1, 2021:

*We also plan on creating an edited volume based on the papers from the conference.
