QUERY: Readings on Guadalajara

Samuel J. Martland's picture

Dear Colleagues,

Do any of you have recommended books, articles, documentaries, etc., about Guadalajara. I am headed to Guadalajara from the first time this spring, for LASA, and I'd like to get some historical background. Any topic, any period, Spanish or English: anything you think would make a visit to Guadalajara more rewarding. I'm not thinking of suggestions of what to see/so or where to go/not go, but of a historical reading list with maybe some current events.

Estimados Colegas,

Hi Sam,

I'm not sure if you're just looking for quick reads like articles/book chapters, but as a social/cultural historian I like Rafael Torres Sánchez, Revolución y vida cotidiana: Guadalajara, 1914-1934.

Perhaps overly specific for your needs, but I also like: María Teresa Fernández Aceves, “Guadalajaran Women and the Construction of National Identity,” in The Eagle and the Virgin: Nation and Cultural Revolution in Mexico, 1920-1940, ed. Mary Kay Vaughan and Stephen E. Lewis, 297-313.

Enjoy,

Here are a couple of reads for you:

- Vivir en Guadalajara : la ciudad y sus funciones edited by the late Carmen Castañeda.
- Migration, Mujercitas and Medicine Men: Living in Urban Mexico by Valentina Napolitano
- Guadalajara by Jose Luis Raza Zaragoza (a very traditional history of the city)
- Robert Curley's new Citizens and Believers on Catholics in Guadalajara and the city after the Revolution.
- For something on the unique Luz del Mundo church with its headquarters in GDL, look at Rene de la Torre's Hijos de la Luz or the first chapter in my own Primitive Revolution (chapter title is La Luz Del Mundo and Hermosa Provincia).
- Almost anything on GDL by Guillermo de la Peña gives you a taste of the urban history and sociology of the city. Try out his Migrantes y comunidades morales: re significación, etnicidad y redes sociales en Guadalajara.
- Laura Zohn's La Nostalgia Amotinada has a nice reflection by architects on the changes in the city over time.
