QUERY: Solar Esclipse

Marc Becker's picture

Our classes start on August 21, which is also the date of a solar eclipse and our university is close to the path totality. I would like to assign the students a reading and assignment in my Latin American survey and Andean history classes that tie this event to what we will be studying in class. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reading, either a primary source and/or a journal article or book chapter, for how solar events were experienced in the ancient Andes? I'm having trouble coming up with something that would work well.

Thanks! marc.

Bernabé Cobo has a few comments on solar and lunar eclipses in the chapters on sun and moon worship in his Historia del nuevo mundo. English versios of those two short chapters are available in Roland Hamilton's translation, _Inca Religion and Customs_ (Austin: UT Press, 2010).
