Call for Papers

27th Annual Conference of the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies
“The Crypto-Jewish Experience in the Americas”
November 5-7, 2017     National Museum of American Jewish History ● Philadelphia, PA

The Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies (SCJS) cordially invites papers on the crypto-Jewish experience from any discipline (e.g., religion, anthropology, history, sociology, philosophy, literature, art, etc.). This year’s conference highlights the crypto-Jewish experience geographically located in the Americas, including North America, New Spain, Central and South America, and the Caribbean Islands. The time period includes the Inquisition era, pre-Colonial days through contemporary times, especially early Colonial America. Topics should be relevant to the descendants of crypto-Jews, conversos, and the early colonial Sephardic experience.

We are particularly interested this year in research on lesser-covered territories such as the American Northeast, the Caribbean Basin, and the Southern Cone.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

American History of Spanish and Portuguese Communities
Studies of Inquisitions in Peru and Mexico
Crypto-Jews in Modern America
Latin American Nationalism and the Inquisition
Sephardic Culture in Contemporary Latin America
Biographies of Conversos in New Spain
Mercantilist History of Atlantic Sephardim
Emerging Communities in Latin America

Conference presentation proposals must include speaker contact details, a title, a 200-word abstract or summary, and a 100-word biography or CV.  Proposals must be received by May 30, 2017.

Send proposals or inquiries to: Leonard Stein, University of Toronto, CryptoJewish.Conference@gmail.com
