TEACHING: History of the American City: Key Documents, Key Sites

I’m developing a new interdisciplinary course that tracks the history of the American city. It’s aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and one goal is to have them interpret primary documents. If you were to imagine the ideal collection of documents, what would you include? I’m as interested in suggestions for visual, architectural, and spatial evidence as I am for texts and other written documents because I’d like students to grasp that cities are physical facts, social artifacts, and discursive constructions. Any suggestions for a text?

Searching for info about Hotei, Taiwan

Dear all,

I’m researching historic landing sites of undersea telegraph cables in Southeast Asia. In particular, I’m trying to track down information about a recorded cable landing in 1917 at Hotei, Taiwan. I’m guessing that Hotei is probably part of what is now Kaoshiung City, and that Hotei is an old Japanese name for this area. But so far I’ve been unable to confirm this or find any other info about Hotei.
