QUERY: history of billiards

Colleagues,

To assist an undergraduate seeking to write a paper in a course on Early Modern Europe, I’ve been looking—in vain, so far—for scholarly literature on the early history of billiards, especially about how billiards went from being the “sport of kings” to being a game played in dangerous pool halls in 18th c. cities like Paris and London.

Any suggestions?

Archives: Photographs from 1920s Mozambique

Northwestern University’s Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies has just acquired a set of 85 original silver print photographs taken in Mozambique in the 1920s.

The photos, taken by an unidentified missionary, depict people in a variety of staged poses.
