Alabama, United States

The Graduate History Association (GHA) of the Department of History at The University of Alabama is pleased to announce that it is hosting its Twelfth Annual Graduate Student Conference on Power and Struggle. The conference will be held on UA’s campus on October 9-10, 2020.

The conference’s theme addresses new approaches of historical analysis that focus on the relationship between struggle and power, especially people who struggled to break, transform, or reclaim the boundaries constructed by those in power. We encourage graduate students to submit proposals that examine these relationships across various temporal, geographical, and topical fields and disciplines. The conference seeks proposals employing theoretical approaches, interdisciplinary methods, comparative perspectives, and multi-archival research bases that push the bounds of historical interpretation. At the keynote address of the conference, one presenter will earn recognition as the recipient of the Best Overall Paper Prize.

The GHA Conference Committee seeks submissions concerning, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Power in institutions, society, and religion
  • Struggle in cultural expression, social relationships, and belief systems
  • Power in discourse on gender, race, and class
  • Struggle against labels in nationalism, ethnicity, or sexual identity
  • Power in traditional structures such as politics, diplomacy, imperialism, and war
  • Struggle in resistance such as crime, protest, liberation, and revolution

Single papers should include a full title, 300-word abstract, and a one-page CV of the presenter. We also highly encourage full-panel proposals. Full panel proposals need to provide a 300-word abstract of the panel’s theme, a list of presenters with paper titles, and a one-page CV for each presenter. All submissions should be sent in PDF or Word format via email to Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

The deadline for proposal submission is Friday May 15, 2020. Final papers should be submitted to commentators by Wednesday September 9, 2020. For more information, please contact the conference committee at the email found below.
