National Endowment for the Arts has award $965,000 in grants to Kentucky arts in Fiscal Year 2022 to the following organizations:

$30,000 Grants for Arts Projects
Actors Theatre of Louisville, Inc. (aka Actors Theatre)
LOUISVILLE KY 40202-2916    
Purpose: To support the production of "Still Ready" by Christina Acosta Robinson and Ken Robinson, and directed by Robert Barry Fleming. Additional Project Description: The biographical, in-person production will build on the virtual docuseries of the same name. The play focuses on the stories of the writers as they pursue work in the arts and entertainment industry, and the impact of the birth of their first child on their professional and family life. Project activities may take place in-person or online as necessary. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will benefit theater artists and audiences in Louisville, Kentucky. Intended Outcome: Artistic activities and traditions are supported to strengthen the nation’s cultural infrastructure.

$10,000 Challenge America Grants
African American Forum, Inc.

Purpose: To support jazz programming at a multi-day arts festival. Additional Project Description: Performances by jazz musicians will be presented at venues throughout Lexington-Fayette Urban County. National and international jazz musicians will be featured as well as local and regional jazz musicians. Intended Beneficiaries: Founded to address limited arts and cultural opportunities presented by and for African American audiences, African American Forum will serve visitors and residents in Lexington-Fayette Urban County with this project. Intended Outcome: Beneficiaries engage with the arts.

Purpose: To support fiber and ceramic studio instruction. Additional Project Description: Master artists will offer instruction in traditional weaving and pottery techniques to apprentices. Additionally, the master artists will conduct monthly workshops for the community and the apprentices will teach fiber arts and pottery to clients in addiction recovery programs. Intended Beneficiaries: The weaving and ceramics programs will benefit the region's artisans as well as the clients in the addiction recovery program. Intended Outcome: Beneficiaries acquire knowledge and skills in the arts.

Appalshop, Inc. (on behalf of Appalachian Media Institute)

Purpose: To support the Appalachian Media Institute's Convergent Media Fellowship, a paid media arts training and professional development program for young artists. Additional Project Description: In the year-long program, youth will have the opportunity to work with Appalshop's professional staff, local artists, and national practitioners while building their portfolios and taking courses in such topics as animation, graphic design, podcasting, and scriptwriting. Participants also will visit production sets and meet with industry leaders to learn more about careers in the media arts field. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will serve young media artists throughout the Appalachian region. Intended Outcome: Artistic activities and traditions are supported to strengthen the nation’s cultural infrastructure.

Purpose: To support the temporary installation of public art pieces in historic downtown Frankfort, Kentucky. Additional Project Description: Pieces for a two-year rotating exhibition of public art will be selected through a juried process. A nationwide call for artists will invite submissions for work in a variety of media including sculpture, mural, and sidewalk poetry. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will benefit Frankfort residents and visitors, as well as the artists selected to create the public art. Purpose: To support traditional arts programming in schools. Additional Project Description: Students in grades K-8 will participate in classroom-based residencies, and K-12 students will participate in after-school programs led by teaching artists providing instruction in Appalachian folk culture, including music, dance, storytelling, and weaving. Performance opportunities will enhance the students' lessons. Intended Beneficiaries: Students in the Knott County Public School District, an underserved region of the Appalachian Mountains in southeast Kentucky, will benefit from the programming. Intended Outcome: Beneficiaries acquire knowledge and skills in the arts.

Purpose: To support an artist residency program. Additional Project Description: Selected artists working primarily in sculpture from Kentucky and across the United States will be provided with a stipend, housing, and studio facilities, as well as installation and exhibition opportunities. Artists will engage the local, rural audience in Central Kentucky through community workshops, lectures, artist talks, and informal interactions with visitors. A partnership with Kentucky State University, a historically Black university, will enable students to engage with the residency program as audience members, interns, and volunteers. Intended Beneficiaries: The residency program will serve participating local and national visual artists, rural Kentucky audiences, and students from Kentucky State University. Intended Outcome: Artistic activities and traditions are supported to strengthen the nation’s cultural infrastructure.

Proposed project partners include Down Syndrome of Louisville, Imagine Blind Players, and Louisville Central Community Center. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will benefit theater artists, residency participants, and audiences in Louisville, Kentucky. Purpose: To support public art at the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden. Additional Project Description: LexArts will commission two local artists, woodcarver Lavon Van Williams, Jr. and metal sculptor Dr. Garry R. Bibbs, to create a public art piece that celebrates the life of Isaac Murphy. Murphy was an award-winning African-American horse-riding jockey who lived in Lexington, Kentucky. Intended Beneficiaries: Artists commissioned and presented will benefit from the project, and residents and visitors in Lexington will benefit from the artwork. Intended Outcome: Artistic activities and traditions are supported to strengthen the nation’s cultural infrastructure.

Purpose: To support the touring production of "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters," a play for young audiences by Karen Abbot, based on the children's book by John Steptoe. Additional Project Description: Set in Zimbabwe, the play is a variation on the Cinderella story. The production will tour to elementary schools in rural parts of Kentucky to reach youth who do not regularly have access to the professional performing arts. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will benefit theater artists and young audiences throughout Kentucky. Intended Outcome: Beneficiaries engage with the arts.

Additional Project Description: Curated and conducted by Music Director Teddy Abrams, festival programming will include works by composers Dafnis Prieto and Angelica Negron, and will encompass a wide variety of genres with a focus on Latin American music. Purpose: To support subgranting to the nonprofit arts sector in response to and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional Project Description: Subgrants will support nonprofit arts organizations with day-to-day organizational business expenses and operating costs to preserve jobs and maintain operations during recovery from the devastating economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Intended Beneficiaries: The subgrants will help restore the local community’s cultural infrastructure, benefitting arts workers, artists, and audiences within the Local Arts Agency’s service area. Purpose: To support the Kentucky Folklife Magazine, an online publication dedicated to the study of the state's folk arts and traditions. Additional Project Description: The staff of the digital magazine will host a series of regional workshops to help contributors create content for the publication and enhance their ethnographic and documentation skills. The workshops also will engage participants from across Kentucky, ensuring equitable geographical and ethnic representation. Additionally, a statewide virtual meeting is planned, which will include presentations about the state's folklife and workshops on grant writing. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will benefit the state's folk artists, scholars, and the general population of Kentucky. Intended Outcome: Beneficiaries engage with the arts.
