I recently delivered the plenary keynote titled
'Asia, Europe and America in the Making of "Caste"'
I am grateful to the EASAS and University of Warsaw for the invitation. I must especially acknowledge the kindness of Professor Danuta Stasik and her colleagues in Warsaw and Professor Roger Jeffery for a generous introduction.
The lecture takes stock of both 'caste' as a category of social analysis generated in the era of European expansion and conquest after 1500 CE and as an old and durable feature of South Asian life that was fitted into the socio-political structure of states. It is thus both a a history of ideas and of dynamic socio-political systems through five centuries.
