Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Humanities & Arts Department
Assistant Teaching Professor of Religion

The Department of Humanities and Arts (HUA) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks to appoint a teaching-track assistant professorship of religion in August 2021. We encourage applications from humanists whose teaching and research explores East Asian religious, philosophical, cultural and intellectual traditions, including Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, Shintoism, folk religions and / or indigenous traditions.

Core duties include teaching 8 undergraduate courses over the course of four 7-week terms, including Introduction to Philosophy and Religion and Introduction to Asia and contribute to the religion/philosophy curriculum as well as an emerging Asian studies curriculum. The successful candidate will have broad liberty to design those courses and create a teaching agenda that can include disciplinary and interdisciplinary humanities courses and global project-based learning opportunities. We encourage pedagogy that is regional and intersectional while anchored in the academic study of religion and philosophy. Therefore, in their application materials, we encourage candidates to discuss how their scholarship and teaching in religion and philosophy can enhance the department's existing and emerging thematic strengths in ethnicity and indigeneity; gender and sexuality; social justice; science and technology; environmental studies. Further, as home to a humanities-based International and Global Studies program, we ask candidates to consider how their approach to integrating transnational, international, comparative or global perspectives creates opportunities not only in religion and philosophy but in global studies broadly defined.
