The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies / Leibniz-Institut für Globale und Regionale Studien is an independent social-science research institute based in Hamburg. It analyses political, social and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and combines this analysis with innovative comparative research on international relations, development and globalisation, violence and security, and political systems. The GIGA seeks to hire a

Research Fellow.

Applications are invited for a 65%-time position, with a contract of two years, starting 1 July 2015. The salary is commensurate with TV-AVH / TVöD EG 13.

The successful candidate will work on all China-related research questions within the research project West African Traders as Translators between Chinese and African Urban Modernities, which is part of the DFG Priority Program 1448 “Adaptation and Creativity”, particularly on issues related to Chinese urban modernity (urban layout, lifestyles, consumption, economic practices, etc.) and on Chinese perspectives on Africa and African modernity.

Your qualifications:

  • excellent M.A. or comparable degree in Modern China Studies or China-focused humanities / social sciences
  • profound knowledge of qualitative research methods and experiences in researching the Chinese internet; research experiences in China are an advantage
  • very good command of Chinese and English; working knowledge of German is an advantage
  • excellent teamwork skills, flexibility and readiness to conduct field research in China / Africa
