Dear Colleagues,

I am excited to share news of the publication of my book Bird Talk and Other Stories by Xu Xu: Modern Tales of a Chinese Romantic

Xu Xu 徐訏 (1908–80) was one of the most widely read Chinese authors of the 1930s to 1960s. His popular urban-gothic tales from pre-war Shanghai, his exotic war-time spy fiction, and his quasi-existentialist love stories full of nostalgia and melancholy written from his exile in Hong Kong offer today’s readers an unusual glimpse into China’s turbulent twentieth century. My book consists of a general introduction, translations of five short stories each of which represents a creative period of Xu Xu’s career, and a scholarly afterward that places his work into the context of 20th-century neo-romanticism. In addition, it includes several previously unpublished photographs and documents.
