Many of us will know James Watson's 1997 classic Golden Arches East: McDonald's in East Asia, and in particular the chapter by Yan Yunxiang about McDonald's in Beijing during the mid-1990s.
As we prepared to discuss that chapter in our graduate seminar, my students directed me to a short documentary about 72 hours in a Beijing McDonald's. It's a short film that shows young and old patrons who come to kill time, meet friends, or because eating there reminds them of their youth. The film is not subtitled, but would still be a nice point of comparison for anyone (e.g., students) who might want to see how things have changed in the 25 years since Yan conducted his original fieldwork.
