VÉRITÉ: Comics from India and Japan

Ryan Holmberg Discussion

Dear Colleagues.

I am happy to announce the publication of the inaugural issue of VÉRITÉ, a 240-page comics anthology from Comix India and Studio Ekonte in Mumbai. Positioning itself as an Indian gekiga magazine, VÉRITÉ is distinguished by its mixed content of new comics mainly from India and classic short-form literary manga from Japan. Anpu Varkey, Shaunak Samvatsar, Biboswan Bose, Nandita Basu, Bharath Murthy, Simone Lamouret, and Nick Tobier have contributed work from India. The Japanese contributors for this volume are Tsuge Tadao, Katsumata Susumu, Yamamatsu Yukichi, and Tsuneyama Yoji. There is also an essay by me on the language of speed and vision within Japanese comics from the '50s and '60s.

The anthology is edited and published by Bharath Murthy, author of "The Vanishing Path: A Graphic Travelogue" (2015), about Buddhist sites in India. Bharath was also an early introducer of Japanese otaku culture in India. For more on his activities, see my "Comix India and the Indo-Manga Connection: An Interview with Bharath Murthy" (2014) on the website of The Comics Journal.
