Dear Colleagues,
I am currently putting together an undergraduate syllabus on Southeast Asia and International Relations. Suggestions on core readings would be welcome.
Thank you.

Post ReplyStanley Karnow's In Our Image (re: Philippines) worked well in my undergraduate class this semester.

I would definitely include Joseph Liow's new book 'Religion and Nationalism in Southeast Asia' published by Cambridge U Press, 2016.
Raymond Scupin
Lindenwood University
I would recommend Michael Leifer's Dictionary of the modern politics of South-East Asia, - 3. ed. (London : Routledge, 2001). Even though it is a little dated, as he passed away in 2001, some of the things there are still useful.
Looking East to Look West: Lee Kuan Yew's Mission India by Sunanda K. Datta-Ray on Singapore and India. The only book on the subject.
I highly recommend "ASEAN, Sovereignty and Intervention in Southeast Asia" by Lee Jones. Fantastic analysis of the international relations of ASEAN and particularly the myth of non-intervention.
You might wish to look at works by Audrey and George Kahin, and also by Al McCoy.
