American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce the launch of the Tradition and Modernity in Taiwan Program, an exploration of culture, language, history, and politics in one of Asia’s most dynamic, welcoming, and convenient societies. The four-week summer program, hosted by National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taipei, Taiwan, combines English-language coursework in Taiwanese culture, history, and contemporary issues with daily instruction in Mandarin Chinese and cultural excursions that bring course concepts to life.

Offering academic credit in sociology and political science through Bryn Mawr College and scholarship support from the Taiwan Ministry of Education, the program is designed to be an accessible and affordable option for students with all levels of background in Asian studies (including those with no background at all).

Program Features:

  • Coursework in Taiwanese culture, society, history, and politics taught in English by expert faculty
  • Daily Chinese language instruction (taught at the beginner and intermediate levels)
  • Hands-on culture classes introducing students to topics such as tai chi, calligraphy and traditional handicrafts
  • Day trips and overnight excursions allowing participants to deepen their understanding of course content

Through the generous support of the Taiwan Ministry of Education, all U.S. students applying for AC Study Abroad scholarship funding for the program will automatically also be considered for additional scholarships of $500 to $2500, awarded based on financial need and academic merit.

Students seeking additional financial aid may be interested in outside scholarship opportunities, including the Fund for Education Abroad, Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants, and the Gilman Scholarship Program.

2018 Program Dates: July 14-August 11

The deadline to apply is February 15, 2018
