The Global Digital Humanities Working Group is pleased to announce that our 3rd Immediate Futures Media Workshop will be held at the University of Rochester on April 8th, Saturday. The theme of the workshop is “Ecologies.” The event is sponsored by the Central New York Humanities Corridor with collaborators from Hamilton College and Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Dr. Thomas Lamarre, Gordon J Laing Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies, East Asian Languages and Civilizations, and the College at the University of Chicago will deliver the keynote address.
We invite research papers, artistic, and Digital Humanities projects that examine the past, present, and future of media ecologies in their varied manifestations. We are particularly interested in conceptions of ecologies as a way to think about issues of colonialism, sociality, technologies, identities, circulation, production, and their intersections with the built/natural environments. Scholars, artists, and digital scholarship/library professionals who closely engage with humanities topics and digital methods are strongly encouraged to apply. Possible topics include but not limited to:
- Ecocriticism
- Environmental impact of digital technologies such as blockchain mining
- Parasitism/virus/virality
- Debates about analog and digital
- Digital/non-human ethnography
- Digital waste
- Artistic and/or scientific representations of ecology
- Ecology and film
- Documentary of ecological issues
- Transnational/global studies of digital media and technologies
- Digital media archeology
- Digital sound studies
- Affect and digital media
Current grad students, contingent faculty, academic staff participants, if selected, will receive an Immediate Futures Media Workshop award of $600 which can be used toward their travel expenses to and from Rochester. Students and employees of Central New York Humanities Corridor member institutions are not eligible for this award, but they are eligible for travel and hotel accommodation reimbursement.
The workshop will include multiple rounds of group reviews and discussions. Participants will be asked to pre-circulate their work, give a 20 min presentation on their work during the event, and participate in group workshops. We will communicate the exact format and schedule of the event once participants have been selected. Participants are expected to arrive at Rochester on April 7th, and they are welcome to stay until April 10th.
If you wish to participate in this workshop, please submit your C.V. and a 300-words abstract for your project to Professor Jiangtao Harry Gu at gu@hws.edu by February 28th, 2023. Participants will be informed of our decision by early March.
