This workshop focuses on the colonial and postwar relationship between Taiwan and the Yaeyama Islands. In particular, this presentation focuses on the roles of Taiwanese farmers in the development of Ishigaki’s pineapple industry from the 1930s to the 1970s.

This talk will first reconstruct the economic and political circumstances that encouraged the establishment of a pineapple industry in Ishigaki. Then, by using memoirs and oral histories, this talk will examine how the Taiwanese community in Ishigaki navigated the transition from Japanese empire to American occupation, paying attention to their understanding of settlement, borderland, and homeland.
