Abstract

The presentation explains theoretical concepts useful for the study of high skilled migration and illustrates them with findings from a comparative study of almost 200 high skilled migrants entering the labor markets of Germany, Turkey, and Canada between the 1960ies and the millennium. Highly skilled migrants faced multiple barriers, such as legal exclusion with respect to their migratory status, devaluation of their cultural capital or symbolic exclusion. Status passages during trajectories into the labor market of a country of arrival must be seen as multi-dimensional, i.e. individuals are embedded in family related-transitions; they navigate education-labor market and migration transitions at the same time. 

With a focus on gender, the presentation discusses the impact of legal partnership status and embeddedness in relations of care on high skilled migrants’ trajectories. In our study, the massive impact of legal exclusion and family status effectively shrouded the subtlereffects of gendered inequalities.

Anja Weiß is professor for macrosociology and transnational processes at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her theoretical interests in global and transnational inequalities translate into comparative empirical studies on highly skilled migrants, the glocalization of professional knowledge, (institutional) racism and legal exclusion, anti-racism, and transnational qualitative research design. Her major publications include a study on high skilled migrants’ trajectories into labor markets in Germany, Turkey and Canada (with Nohl, Schittenhelm and Schmidtke: Work in Transition, Toronto UP 2014). She serves on the board of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Integration and Migration at University of Duisburg-Essen.

 

The event is part of the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research Germany)-Funded project "Qualification and Skill in the Migration Process of Foreign Workers in Asia".
