The University of North Carolina Asheville invites proposals for panels, papers, posters, and roundtables on the African American experience in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia. Presentations from a variety of disciplines—including sociology, history, anthropology, literature, and others—on western North Carolina will be prioritized, but scholarship on all Southern Appalachian communities will be considered. Our goal is to provide an open forum for scholars to engage each other and our community on the vital issues facing Appalachian communities of color.

This year’s conference provides a platform for a variety of themes, such as visibility, race in education, and social justice, to be explored.  The conference will also continue its tradition of highlighting regional African American culture.

The African Americans in Western North Carolina Conference began in 2014. It offers scholars and the community an opportunity to meet and discuss issues related to the African American experience in western North Carolina. Original scholarship that sheds new light on the African American experience is preferred. Asheville has a long history as a regional center for African Americans in this region. Its vibrant culture and diverse communities serve as a model for this conference, which hope to integrate scholarly and community engagement on issues of past and current significance.
