World Cup from European(ist) Perspectives

Michael Munnik's picture

Greetings, everyone.

The editors of H-SAE wanted to take the opportunity of the World Cup to prompt some discussion regarding what this tournament means in the participating nations represented on this list. As of today, we've had a chance to see all teams in action. How are the top-ranked teams performing viz the expectations of their home supporters? What storylines nourish the fateful clashes that appear on the schedule?

If you've incorporated sports and fan culture in your research, we'd love to hear what you've found and how it squares with that we're seeing on the pitch. If you're currently conducting fieldwork in one of the participating nations, a snapshot in anthropological perspective would be grand (even if the story is, "I can't get any of my participants to meet with me, because daily life is suspended, and I fly back to America in the second week of July...")

We are looking for short, accessible responses. Blog-style entries rather than research essays are what we're looking for. I would "get the ball rolling," but my research field is Scotland, and our only response right now is ignominy. (Watching the Italians defeat England at the local pizzeria would have felt more appropriate if everyone else in the place weren't speaking Italian to each other. More diasporic than Anyone-But-England sympathies.)

Best,

We're not the only list on H-Net with a useful perspective on the tournament. And across the network, editors are collecting posts in a project, which you can check out here: https://networks.h-net.org/world-cup-2014

Give a read, follow a discussion, and think about contributing something yourself.
