Please join us on Tuesday, April 13th at 10:30 EST for a special talk by Dr. Shayne Dahl, Post-doctoral fellow at McMaster University.
This talk explores a transnational, interfaith event hosted by a New Age-Maori group who call themselves “the Waitaha” in Waitangi, New Zealand (Aotearoa) in October 2014. I examine the peculiar role of Shugendō (Japanese mountain asceticism) in the event since the keynote speaker was a famous ascetic from northern Japan who came with the largest contingent of participants. Through this case study, I suggest that claims to indigeneity are being strategically deployed by both groups to assert authenticity in their own contested contexts.
