Dear Members,

With apologies for cross-posting, and especially for being so slow to post on the mailing list (one week before the deadline), I am pleased to announce that Kogakkan University (located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture) will be hosting a seventh year of the “Ise and Japan Study Program.” The program is open to graduate (Master or PhD) or post-graduate researchers (including faculty) who are interested in learning more about Japanese language, history, and culture with a focus on the Ise-Shima region and the Shinto religious tradition.

The program covers the cost of food, lodging, and domestic transportation for participants, who will attend lectures and go on field trips to significant archaeological, cultural, and historical sites.

The Ise and Japan Study Program is sponsored by Kogakkan University and Ise City, which is home to the Jingu shrine complex.

The application deadline is December 21, 2020 (Monday), and the program will be held from February 1, 2021 (Monday) to March 13, 2021 (Saturday). Because of the pandemic and associated travel uncertainties, applicants must be based in Japan, and a Covid-19 test will be required (see the application materials for details).

Kogakkan University has had face-to-face classes since May at the university, and Mie Prefecture has managed to weather the pandemic relatively well, though there has been a spike in recent days as Japan is experiencing a third wave. Of course, conditions are subject to change, and updated numbers can be checked on the prefecture's Covid page at https://www.pref.mie.lg.jp/YAKUMUS/HP/m0068000066_00002.htm

Please see the link below for the application form, details about eligibility, requirements, last year's schedule, past participants, and so forth.
